But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name: (John 1:12, KJV)
To believe in Jesus is to receive Him. If you believe that Jesus is God, that He became flesh and gave His life as a perfect Sacrifice (cleansing you from all sin), that He rose from the dead the third day, that He is ascended to the right hand of the Father and is Lord of all, then you have received Him and He has given you the power to become a son of God.
The "power to become…” By receiving the Word of God (Jesus) you have been given the authority, liberty of choice and ability to now ‘become’ a son of God. Like Jesus, you now have the internal power and privilege to always do what pleases the Father (John 8:29). This is what it means to be a son of God; to be led by His Spirit (Romans 8:14).
Let me put it this way… An athlete who has the potential to run under 10 seconds in the 100 metres has the power and ability to do so; however, without training it would remain just that - potential. The same is true for every person who has placed their faith in Jesus and received Him as Lord and Saviour. Every believer has the authority (liberty of choice and ability) to become a son of God; however, without enduring the Father’s training process, that power remains unused. We must all choose.
When we receive Jesus Christ, our spirit is joined as one with His Spirit and we receive a new heart; however, our mind still has to be renewed. Without this process of renewing our mind, we cannot do that which pleases God, because we will not know what pleases Him.
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. (Romans 12:2, KJV)
Without the renewing of our mind we cannot step into Sonship. A son knows the Father’s will and also does it. If after we are saved we continue to listen to and watch the same old garbage, then how can we hope to prove (discern or recognise) our Father’s perfect will? If we do not replace every lie of the enemy with the Truth, how can we expect to stand set apart from this world?
Have you ever taken a journey using a SatNav where the installed map is not up to date? The result is that the SatNav cannot help you whilst you remain in the "unrecognised" location. However, when you use a SatNav that recognises every road you take, even if you take a wrong turning the navigators voice is able to guide you back on track again. Our mind is like the pre-installed map on a SatNav, and the Holy Ghost is like the voice of the SatNav. When we continually renew our mind with the Word of Truth, the Holy Ghost can lead us using the map we know (pre-installed). We can follow His leading because we are able to discern His voice and recognise (prove) what is that good, acceptable and perfect will of God. On the other hand, a mind that has not been renewed is like having an out of date map installed on a SatNav. Because His word is not in you, you will not recognise the voice of the Holy Ghost when He speaks; and it will difficult for Him to lead you. More over, when you do recognise Him, you will most likely choose to disobey Him because you are still conformed to this world.
Without the daily renewing of our minds, we won’t even believe that we have the same authority and ability as Jesus does on the inside of us; but we do (1 John 4:17). Jesus has given us the ability to become sons of God; a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people (1 Peter 2:9). The enemy would have you believe that it is impossible for you to do that which pleases God; but that my friend is a lie. You must renew your mind and understand that when you put your trust in the Son of God, He gave you the POWER to become a son of God. It is up to you to utilise this power.
“This process of becoming a son of God is not a glamorous one, but it is glorious. It is a process of death to self-will and a process of ‘being’ (as opposed to doing) – it is a daily process of being transformed by the renewing of your mind (Romans 12:2).”
